Corrosion challenges for structural steel

Structural steel is often considered to be low priority and simple to protect. In many ways this is true in comparison to other areas that may have to tolerate heat and chemicals. However, it should be remembered that the structural steel is the backbone of the operation, and corrosion can also mean stoppages.

Structural steel is physically complicated and difficult to paint. So it is important to understand this at new construction – a better done job then, the less need for later maintenance. If and when maintenance is needed it is almost impossible to paint using a spray gun, so coatings suitable for brush and roller are important. An advantage over other areas is with brush and roller painting can be done during operation, so there is no reason for corrosion to get hold, provided regular inspection is carried out.
